1. Curret structure

The IMO Group manages the largest network of reference centres for cancer treatment using Radiotherapy techniques currently operating in Spain.

The IMO Group understands that our structure must similarly take into account the dynamism of current society with the aim of offering an effective response to the demands of the people who live within it. For this reason, and within our main perspectives for the future, we emphasize our eagerness to continue extending our activities to those places where we can contribute to defeating cancer through sharing our knowledge and experience.

2. The network of centres

The IMO Group currently manages 6 centres specializing in cancer treatment using radiotherapy and radiosurgery techniques. The design of the network responds to the necessity of satisfying the increasing demands brought about by society during the last few years. As a consequence, other 4 centres are in project.

Each specialist centre is a reference, not only for the population in its Autonomous Community, but also for those that originate from other Autonomous Communities, or even other countries.

It is fitting to emphasize that the activities in our centres are adapted to the principal of efficient coordination. Therefore, the Treatment Units in our network have:
  • an intranet which facilitates inter-centre communications.
  • a homogeneous multidisciplinary framework of protocols for the development and application of techniques and treatments in relation to the type of tumour to be treated.
In 2005, the following centres are included within our network:

Unidad de Oncología, Radioterapia y Radiocirugía San Francisco de Asís (Sanatorio San Francisco de Asís, Madrid). This started operating in 1991, and was a pioneer in the use of specialized irradiation techniques. This centre specializes in radiosurgery. It is a reference centre for patients from Portugal.

Instituto Madrileño de Oncología (Madrid). Began activity in its own premises in 1996 and incorporates 3D Dynamic Radiotherapy which has given excellent results in the treatment of prostate cancer. It also includes techniques for radiosurgery and early diagnosis. Currently it is a reference centre for patients from the Autonomous Community of Castilla & León.

Instituto Oncológico de Castilla-La Mancha (Clínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Toledo). Began its activities in 1997 with the installation of the first and only linear accelerator in the Castilla-La Mancha Autonomous Community. Currently it also offers Brachytherapy techniques.

Instituto Alicantino de Oncología (Sanatorio del Perpetuo Socorro, Alicante). Began operating in 1998, and is highlighted by specializing in the complete range of radiotherapy techniques in existence today, including radiosurgery techniques that were, until then, nonexistent in the Province. It could be a reference center for international patients.

Instituto Oncológico de Castilla-La Mancha (Ciudad Real). Began operating in its own premises in 2003. Located next to an AVE railway station, and also very close to the airport, it is equipped with the most advanced technology for the application of radiotherapy and brachytherapy techniques with a second linear accelerator recently being installed.

Instituto Oncológico de Murcia (Murcia). Will begin operating in March 2005 incorporating the most advanced technology for the application of radiosurgery and brachytherapy techniques. It could be a reference center for international patients.

3. Our activity

The activities of the centres managed by the IMO Group revolve around providing specialized oncological services based on Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery techniques. In 2004 we treated 4,000 patients. Among them, 100 were EU citizens who are residents in Spain.

Moreover, the IMO Group Foundation has undertaken its activities within the framework of the Articles of Association which regulate its activities. Consequently, it is fitting to highlight the group’s organization of the 3rd International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society Congress (Madrid, 1997) as well as the IX Spanish Radiosurgery Society Congress (Alicante, 2004).

Finally, the objective of the society International Oncology Group is to internationally promote our therapeutic knowledge and experience. In this respect, the IMO Group has developed close cooperation with professionals in various countries through residential training programs in the management of our techniques, which have proved highly beneficial. Our current commitment is to continue promoting this international cooperation in all those geographical areas where we can contribute to the development of modern oncology.
